Dance Rules and Regulations

Appropriate
All choreography should be age appropriate for the performers and the family viewing audience. Anything considered inappropriate will result in marks being deducted at the judges' discretion.

Routine Length
Dance routines should be no more than 2.5 minutes. No penalty will be taken for routines that are too long unless it affects the quality of performance.

Performance and Music Requirements (taken from www.hiphopinternational.com)

  1. The routine must be performed, in its entirety, to music selected and prepared by the team.
  2. A team's competition music must be the only piece of music recorded on the CD.
  3. The team's name and division should be printed clearly on the CD.
  4. A maximum of three (3) songs or recordings may be used. The songs may be edited to enhance choreography and personal performance. A compilation (music mix) that contains more than 3 songs may not be used.
  5. Original sound effects and original compositions are permitted. However, sound effects that are identifiable as taken from another song and are over four (4) seconds will be considered an additional song.
  6. The competition music must not contain inappropriate, lewd or offensive language.

Boundaries
Teams will compete on a standard 40 x 40 floor. No penalty will be taken unless a dancer leaves the mat to a point where it is considered unsafe.

Please note that Hip Hop International competitions use a 30 x 30 floor.

Teams should wear clothing that reflects the character and style of the performance. This may include accessories such as hats, caps, gloves, scarves, jewellery and other forms of theatrical dress. Taking off pieces of clothing during the performance is permitted, provided it is not offensive or out of character. Discarded clothing should be placed outside the competition area and never thrown into the audience.

Full face makeup, body oils, body paints, body and hair glitter are prohibited as is any other substance applied to the body that may affect the clean dry surface of the floor and the safety of fellow competitors. Dancers may wear jazz shoes, jazz/dance boots, jazz sneakers or athletic sport shoes. All footwear must have clean, non-scuff soles (street shoes and street boots are not acceptable.) Tap shoes or bare feet are prohibited.

Equipment
Props that are NOT considered an integral part of attire/costumes are prohibited (ie: canes, chairs, tambourines, musical instruments.) Kneepads, helmets, or any other performing apparatus to aid in the proper safety and execution of a move is allowed.

Supervision and Insurance
An adult - 18 years of age or older - must accompany each team in the capacity of a coach/supervisor. Teams will attend the competition as a member of their school program and will be insured as such. If they are a club, proof of insurance must be supplied.

Unsports(wo)man-like Conduct
Any team found as disrespectful to judges, staff, or the efforts of other teams will be disqualified from the event and asked to provide written apology to the injured party before being invited back to another FlyGirl event. Dancers are responsible for their fans in this regard.

Unsafe Routine
FlyGirl reserves the right to disqualify any team who's routine is deemed as unsafe, and/or stop the routine during a performance.
